Every lesson puts a person on a horse under your direction. When a student is hurt, the question becomes whether your instruction was to blame. Even a claim you win costs real money to defend.
Riding instructor insurance covers that exposure and the details around it: student accident medical, horses you borrow or use for lessons, and events you run. Many states have equine activity liability laws that limit some claims, but they do not stop a lawsuit from being filed.
Where instructor claims come from
- A student falls in a lesson
- The family says the horse was too much for the rider or the exercise was unsafe.
- A lesson horse is hurt
- A school horse you lease or borrow is injured during a lesson.
- A camp or clinic incident
- A child is hurt at a summer camp or a clinic you organized off your usual property.
- A spectator is injured
- A parent at the rail is kicked or stepped on while helping with a horse.

Good to know before you quote
- Teaching at someone else’s barn
- The barn’s policy may not cover you. Carry your own and ask whether the barn wants to be named as an additional insured.
- Minors and camps
- Programs for kids rate differently. Tell us about camps and student ages on the form.
- Releases still matter
- Signed releases and posted equine activity warnings, where your state requires them, work alongside your policy.
