Equine coverage
Older Horse Insurance
The horse that carried you for years still deserves cover. Mortality and limited medical for seniors, placed with carriers who write them.
Most carriers tighten up as a horse ages, and some stop writing new mortality past a certain birthday. That does not mean your senior is out of options. The right carrier still writes older horses on terms that make sense.
Coverage shifts as the years add up, with adjusted values, limits, and sometimes named-peril cover instead of full mortality. We know which carriers stay in the game for seniors and place you with them.
What senior coverage looks like
Older Horse Insurance at a glance.
Senior mortality
Full mortality for horses into their late teens and beyond, where a carrier still offers it.
Limited and named-peril cover
When full mortality is off the table, named-peril policies cover specific risks like accident and certain illnesses.
Limited medical
Some carriers add a capped medical benefit for older horses, often with age-based limits.
Colic and surgical options
Surgical allowances that still apply as your horse ages, where available.

Good to know before you quote
Age cutoffs vary
One carrier may stop new mortality at 15 while another writes well past it. Which carrier you ask matters more with an older horse.
Terms change with age
Expect adjusted values, lower medical limits, and a possible shift from full mortality to named perils as the horse ages.
Keep coverage in force
Holding a policy without a lapse is often easier than starting fresh at an older age, so renew on time.

Straight answers
Older Horses questions, answered.
Can you insure a horse over 20?
Often yes. Some carriers write mortality or named-peril cover well past 20, though terms tighten with age. The carrier you approach matters more than the number itself.
Why did my carrier drop my older horse?
Many carriers set an age cap on new or renewing mortality. A drop from one carrier does not mean the market is closed. Another may still write the horse on adjusted terms.
What is named-peril coverage?
When full mortality is no longer offered, a named-peril policy covers specific listed risks like accident, fire, and certain illnesses rather than every cause of death.
Is medical available for senior horses?
Sometimes, usually with lower limits and age-based conditions. Surgical and colic allowances may also be available depending on the carrier and the horse.
